What is CLAT? The Complete Guide for Aspiring Law Students

So you’ve heard the word “CLAT” floating around, in school, from a senior, maybe from a coaching ad. And you’re wondering: what exactly is it, and is it relevant to me?

Here’s the answer: CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) is India’s national entrance exam for getting into the best law colleges in the country – the National Law Universities (NLUs). Think of it the way JEE is the gateway to IITs. CLAT is that same gateway, but for law.

Now let’s break it all down.

Topic Key points
What it is CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) is India’s national entrance exam for 5-year integrated law degrees (BA LLB and similar) at 26 National Law Universities. NLU Delhi is the exception and uses AILET.

Preparation Build a reading habit early, practise passages by section, solve previous years’ papers, and take timed mocks in the last 2 to 3 months.

What is CLAT?

CLAT stands for Common Law Admission Test, the national law entrance exam for admission to 5-year integrated LLB programmes. The Consortium of NLUs holds it once a year, and your score gives you an All India Rank that decides which NLU seat you are offered in counselling.

26 NLUs admit through CLAT, and dozens of private law colleges accept the score as well. NLU Delhi is the exception. It runs its own test, AILET.

CLAT began in 2008. Before that, each NLU ran its own entrance test, so a student applying to several had to prepare for several papers, often on clashing dates. One common exam replaced them. Since 2019 the Consortium has run the test centrally instead of NLUs hosting it in rotation.

What Does a Good CLAT Score Get You?

Your CLAT All India Rank converts a Class 12 result into a seat at a National Law University, where a 5-year integrated LLB is the main degree. The points below cover what that rank gets you, from seat allotment to placement outcomes.

  • A seat in an NLU. Each offers a 5-year integrated law degree such as BA LLB (Hons).
  • One exam for many universities. You rank NLUs by preference at registration, and seats are allotted by merit.
  • A limited pool of seats. Published counts run to roughly 4,000 UG seats across NLUs, and the figure varies by source.
  • Career outcomes that differ by NLU. For scale, NALSAR’s NIRF 2025 data lists a median salary of ₹17.5 lakh for its BA LLB graduates. Check each NLU’s own placement data before comparing.

CLAT UG vs CLAT PG

CLAT is a single law entrance exam held at two levels, one for students finishing Class 12 and one for LLB graduates. The table compares who each level is for, the programme it leads to, and the paper format.

CLAT UG CLAT PG
Who it is for Students who have passed or are appearing in Class 12 Law graduates (LLB)
Programme 5-year integrated LLB (BA LLB, BBA LLB, BCom LLB, BSc LLB, BSW LLB) 1-year LLM
Paper 120 questions, 2 hours 120 questions, 2 hours

Most people searching “what is CLAT” mean CLAT UG, so the rest of this guide covers the UG paper.

CLAT registration 2027 opened on 3 August 2026 and closes on 31 October 2026, so the application window is the date to watch right now. The table lists the notification, registration, admit card and exam dates in order.

Event Date
Notification released 22 July 2026
Registration opened 3 August 2026

Admit card November 2026 (date to be announced)
CLAT 2027 exam 6 December 2026

CLAT UG Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme

The CLAT syllabus has five sections, and all but Quantitative Techniques are built around passages. You read a passage, then answer questions on it, so you do not need to memorise bare acts or grammar rules. Section sizes are approximate ranges, so the exact split shifts slightly each year.

Section Questions Weightage What it tests
English Language 22–26 20% Comprehension and inference from passages of about 450 words
Current Affairs including GK 28–32 25% Passages drawn from news and other non-fiction
Legal Reasoning 28–32 25% Applying a legal principle given in the passage to a situation
Logical Reasoning 22–26 20% Arguments, premises and conclusions
Quantitative Techniques 10–14 10% Class 10-level maths through short data sets

How the paper feels in practice. 120 questions in 120 minutes averages one minute per question. The passages are the real time cost, since the Consortium sets them so a Class 12 student can read and solve one in about 5 to 7 minutes.

Negative marking. With four options, a blind guess has a small positive expected value (about +0.06 marks per question). One eliminated option raises that to about +0.17. So skip questions you cannot narrow down at all, and attempt the ones where you can rule out at least one option.

No pattern change for CLAT 2027. Any reforms recommended by the Expert Committee chaired by Justice Indu Malhotra would apply from CLAT 2028 at the earliest.

Topic-wise detail is in the CLAT 2027 syllabus and CLAT exam pattern guides.

Who Can Appear for CLAT UG? Eligibility

Students can take CLAT after 12th with any stream, and the conditions come down to your Class 12 result. The points below cover the minimum marks, age limit and attempts, so you can confirm you qualify before filling the CLAT application form.

  • You must have passed Class 12 or an equivalent exam, or be appearing in the March/April 2027 exams. Proof of passing is required at admission, or your candidature can be cancelled.
  • You need at least 45% marks (40% for SC/ST candidates).
  • There is no upper age limit.
  • Any stream (Science, Commerce or Arts) and any board is accepted.
  • There is no cap on the number of attempts.

Full conditions are in the CLAT eligibility criteria guide.

Which Colleges Accept CLAT Scores in India?

There are 26 National Law Universities in India that admit students on their CLAT score, and a seat can be allotted only in the NLUs you list in your preferences at registration. The table shows four top-ranked ones with their NIRF Law rank for 2025.

NLU City NIRF Law rank 2025
NLSIU Bengaluru 1
NALSAR University of Law Hyderabad 3
WBNUJS Kolkata 4
GNLU Gandhinagar 5

NLU Delhi ranked 2nd in the same list but admits through AILET, not CLAT. Private and affiliated law colleges that accept CLAT scores run their own cutoffs and processes.

How Many Students Appear for CLAT Every Year?

CLAT registrations reached a record 92,344 for CLAT 2026, about 17% more than the year before. The table splits the figures into UG and PG registrations and the number of candidates who actually appeared.

That’s a lot of competition, but here’s the flip side: a student who cracks CLAT with a strong rank has genuinely beaten nearly a lakh aspirants to get there. That means something.

CLAT 2026 Number
Total registrations 92,344
UG registrations 75,009
PG registrations 17,335
Total appeared 88,657
UG appeared 72,631

CLAT 2025 had 78,914 total registrations. Roughly 4,000 UG seats against 72,631 UG test-takers is why the top NLUs close at very low ranks.

Is CLAT Exam Tough? Honest Answer for Beginners

Compared to JEE or NEET, CLAT tests different skills – reading speed, current affairs awareness, and logical thinking, rather than formula-heavy science. But it’s no pushover either. The competition is intense, and the passage-based format trips up many students who haven’t practiced enough.

The good news: CLAT rewards consistent preparation over a long period, not last-minute cramming.

Is CLAT Right for You?

CLAT preparation suits students who enjoy reading and reasoning more than memorising, and your stream matters less than your reading habit. The checklist below helps you judge whether the CLAT UG exam fits you.

  • You are comfortable reading long passages and picking out the main argument.
  • You can follow a newspaper regularly, since Current Affairs is about a quarter of the paper.
  • Class 10 maths does not scare you. It is only about 10% of the paper.
  • You are open to law as a five-year commitment, not just an exam target.

Your stream does not matter, and you do not need any law background.

How to Prepare for CLAT Exam as a Beginner?

If you’re in Class 11 or 12 and serious about law, here’s what actually works:

  • Read a newspaper daily: The Hindu or Indian Express. Current Affairs is 25% of the paper.
  • Practice passages: CLAT is entirely reading-based. Speed and comprehension matter.
  • Solve previous year papers: Nothing explains the exam pattern better than actual CLAT papers.
  • Take mock tests regularly: Time management under pressure is a skill you build only through practice.
  • Don’t ignore Legal Reasoning: It’s learnable and highly scoring once you understand how to apply principles.

Career Launcher’s CLAT test series is a good starting point if you’re not sure how to structure this — it paces mocks progressively as your prep advances.

CLAT vs Other Law Entrance Exams

Besides CLAT, AILET, SLAT and LSAT–India are the other exams used for law school admission in India, each tied to a different set of colleges. The table shows which exam is used where, so you can plan your applications.

Exam Used for admission to
CLAT 26 NLUs and several private law colleges
AILET NLU Delhi
SLAT Symbiosis law schools
LSAT–India 30+ law schools
MH CET (Law) Law colleges in Maharashtra

Conclusion

CLAT is the single most important exam for anyone who wants to study law at a National Law University in India. It’s fair, it’s standardized, and it rewards students who read widely and think clearly.

If law is your dream, CLAT is your starting point.

If you’re just starting out and want a guided plan instead of figuring this out alone, CL-LST’s CLAT online crash course covers all five sections with the same structure used in this guide.
