List of Universities Abroad Whose Degrees in Law are Recognised by The Bar Council of India
1. RANGOON UNIVERSITY
(a) RESOLUTION NO. 45/1965:
"In exercise of the powers conferred on the Bar Council of India
U/s 24(1)(c)(iv) of the Advocates Act, 1961, the Bar Council
of India resolve to recognise the degree in law conferred by
the University of Rangoon prior to 4.1.48."
(b) RESOLUTION NO. 105/1972:
"RESOLVED that B.L. Degree in law taken in 1957 from the University
of Rangoon be recognised for the purposes of enrolment U/s.
24 (1)(c) (iv) of the Advocates Act, 1961."
(c) RESOLUTION NO. 79/1973 (Relevant portion only):
"RESOLVED that the degree in law of the Rangoon University be
recognised for the purpose of Section 24(1)(c)(iv) of the Advocates
Act, 1961 subject to the rules relating to an applicant passing
a written test of proficiency in English where medium of instruction
has been other than English excepting in the cases where such
a test is not necessary because the applicant has obtained his
qualifying degree or equivalent qualification with English as
one of the subjects or because he has passed the test as a part
of his instruction in law."
2. RAJASHAHI AND DACCA UNIVERSITIES [ERSTWHILE EAST PAKISTAN AND NOW BANGLADESH]
RESOLUTION NO. 48/1965:
"RESOLVED that for the purpose of Section 24(1) (c) (iv) of
the Act, the degree in law obtained from the Rajashahi and Dacca
Universities in Pakistan shall be recognised."
3. TRIBHUVAN UNIVERSITY, NEPAL
(a) RESOLUTION NO. 38/1966:
"The Bar Council of India will recognise those law degrees given
to any particular individual by the Tribhuvan University provided
he had obtained a Bachelor's degree of that University
or any other University in India before being admitted to law
course."
(b) RESOLUTION NO. 162/1967:
"RESOLVED that with reference to Resolution No. 38/1966 of the
Council, the requirement laid down in Resolution No. 20/1963
and 50/1965 shall be deemed to apply to law degrees obtained
from the Tribhuvan University."
(c) RESOLUTION NO. 26/1976 (LE):
"RESOLVED that Resolution No. 38/1966 shall be further subject
to the condition that the law degree has been obtained after
under going a course of study in law for a minimum period of
three years. This Resolution shall be effective from the academic
year 1977."
(d) RESOLUTION NO. 5/1978(LE):
"The Committee recommends that the law degree of Tribhuvan University
be recognised in terms of Resolutions passed earlier by the
Council ( Resolution No. 38/1966 and 162/1967) but the conditions
that the law course should be after graduation should be insisted
upon."

(e) ITEM NO. 19/1987 (LE):
Legal Education Committee went through the relevant correspondence
and the syllabus of Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, for LL.B
degree in law, originally to join the 3 year law degree course,
the pre-requisite was a graduation. Under those circumstances
candidates who have passed the three year law degree course
after graduation and obtained the law degree was recognised
by the Bar Council of India. But if the degree in law is obtained
by a candidate without graduation, the law degree cannot be
recognised. Accordingly request is made to the Bar Council of
India to continue to recognise the degree in law of the Tribhuvan
University obtained after graduation and not otherwise. Berhampur
University and Tribhuvan University should be informed accordingly.
4. PUNJAB UNIVERSITY (LAHORE - PAKISTAN)
RESOLUTION NO. 76/1966:
"RESOLVED that for the purpose of Section 24(1)(c)(iv) of the
Act, the degree in law from the University of Punjab at Lahore
in Pakistan shall be recognised."
5. UNIVERSITY OF SIND, PAKISTAN AND UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE
RESOLUTION NO. 100/1969:
"RESOLVED that the degrees in law obtained from the Universities
of Singapore and Sind be and are hereby recognised under Section
24(1)(c)(iv) of the Advocates Act, 1961."
6. OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITIES, U.K
RESOLUTION NO. 116/1969:
"RESOLVED that in exercise of the powers vested in the Bar Council
of India U/s. 24(1)(c)(iv) of the Advocates Act, 1961 the B.A
Degree (in law) conferred by the Universities of Oxford and
Cambridge be and are hereby recognised."
7. LONDON UNIVERSITY, U.K
(a) RESOLUTION NO. 4A/1970:
"RESOLVED that in exercise of the powers vested in the Bar Council
of India U/s. 24(1)(c)(iv) of the Advocates Act, 1961 the LL.B
Degree of the London University obtained after graduation from
any Indian University be and is hereby recognised."
(The above resolution was modified by RESOLUTION NO. 37/1983)
"RESOLVED that the Resolution No. 4A/1970 be and is hereby modified
by deleting the words "obtained after graduation from any Indian
University."
(b) RESOLUTION NO. 35/1989:
"RESOLVED that the LL.B Degree (External) awarded by the London
University be not recognised by the Bar Council of India for
the purpose of enrolment as advocates."
In supersession of Resolution No. 4A/1970 and 37/1983 passed
by the Bar Council of India it is resolved that in exercise
of powers vested in the Bar Council of India U/s 24(1)(c)(iv)
of the Advocates Act, the LL.B Degree of the London University
be and is hereby recognised."
(c) RESOLUTION NO. 15/1990:
"RESOLVED that the recommendations of the Legal Education Committee be accepted and the LL.B (External) degree of the London University conferred on the students who have commenced their courses of study for such degree prior to the date of this Resolution i.e 10th & 11th February ' 1990, be recognised for the purpose of enrolment as advocates."
8. KARACHI UNIVERSITY, PAKISTAN
RESOLUTION NO. 46/1971:
"RESOLVED that the LL.B Degree in law of the Karachi University
in Pakistan be and is hereby recognised U/s.24(1)(c)(iv) of
the Advocates Act, 1961."
9. LEEDS UNIVERSITY, U. K.
RESOLUTION NO. 41/1972:
"RESOLVED that in exercise of the powers vested in the Bar Council
of India U/s.24(1)(c)(iv) of the Advocates Act, 1961 the LL.B
Degree of the Leeds University obtained after graduation from
India University be and is hereby recognised."
10. UNIVERSITY OF STAPHEN BATROI, IRWILUS, POLAND
RESOLUTION NO. 17/1974:
"RESOLVED that the Bar Council of India accepts the recommendations
of the Legal Education Committee that the Master of Law (Magister
Juris) degree of the University of Staphen Batroi, Irwilus (Poland)
be recognised U/s. 24(1)(c)(iv) of the Advocates Act, 1961."
11. MAKARERE UNIVERSITY, UGANDA.
RESOLUTION NO. 18/1974:
"RESOLVED that the Bar Council of India accepts the recommendations
of the Legal Education Committee that the Bachelor of Law (LL.B)
degree of the Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda be recognised
U/s.24(1)(c)(iv) of the Advocates Act, 1961."
12. CHITTAGONG UNIVERSITY, BANGLADESH
RESOLUTION NO. 11/1976 (LE):
"RESOLVED that the LL.B Degree of the Chittagong University
be and is hereby recognised U/s. 24(1)(c)(iv) of the Advocates
Act, 1961."
13. COUNCIL FOR NATIONAL ACADEMIC AWARDS, U. K
RESOLUTION NO. 86/1978:
"RESOLVED that the recommendations of the Legal Education Committee
be accepted and that B.A Degree in Law conferred by the Council
of National Academic Awards, U.K be recognised provided that
the said degree is obtained after graduation from any Indian
University."
14. INNS OF COURTS SCHOOL OF LAW, U.K
RESOLUTION NO. 68/1978:
"RESOLVED that the qualification of any person who has passed
the examination conducted by the Council of Legal Education,
England after having undergone a three year course in the Inns
of Courts School of Law shall and is hereby recognised as requisite
qualification for the purpose of admission as an advocate under
Section 24(1)(c)(iv) of the Act."
15. UNIVERSITY OF ZAMBIA
RESOLUTION NO. 46/1980:
"RESOLVED that the Bar Council of India on a consideration of
the recommendations of its Legal Education Committee, hereby
recognises the LL.B
Degree awarded by the University of Zambia for the purpose of
enrolment as advocates."
16. CITY UNIVERSITY OF LONDON, U.K
RESOLUTION NO. 96/1980:
"RESOLVED that the diploma in law of the City University in
London be and is hereby recognised as the requisite qualification
for the purpose of admission as an advocate U/s 24(1)(c)(iv)
of the Advocates Act, 1961."
17. SAKAT CHEWAN UNIVERSITY, CANADA
RESOLUTION NO. 82/1982:
"RESOLVED that the LL.B Degree of the Sakat Chewan University
obtained after graduation be and is hereby recognised for the
purpose of enrolment as Advocate U/s 24(1)(c)(iv) of the Advocates
Act, 1961"
18. CORNELL LAW SCHOOL, U.S.A
RESOLUTION NO. 16/1988:
"RESOLVED that in exercise of powers vested in the Bar Council
of India U/s 24
(1)(c)(iv) of the Advocates Act, 1961, the degree of Doctor
of law ( J.D.) of Cornell law school be and is hereby recognised
for the purpose of enrolment as advocate."
19. SOUTH WESTERN UNIVERSITY, U.S.A
Proceedings of the Legal Education Committee meeting held on 2nd September 1988 recognising the J.P. Degree of the South - Western University, U.S.A
J. D. Degree of South Western University, U.S.A
"Committee considered the Secretary's notes. The Chairman
stated that the report of Dr. Krishna Bahadur should be accepted
and the Juris Doctor Degree of the South Western University,
U.S.A may be recognised as equivalent to LL.B Degree of any
Indian University. The Legal Education Committee further recommended
that the Council may take appropriate action in the matter of
reciprocity without which Mr. Kevin F.D. Amur cannot be enrolled
in India."
(The above recommendation of the LEC was accepted by the Council in its meeting held on 26th and 27th November ' 1988 vide Resolution No. 98/1988).
20. UNIVERSITY OF WALES INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, U.K
RESOLUTION NO. 17/1988:
"RESOLVED that in exercise of powers vested in the Bar Council of India U/s 24(1)(c)(iv) of the Advocates Act, 1961, the LL.B Degree of University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology be and is hereby recognised for the purpose of enrolment as advocate."
MODIFICATION OF RESOLUTION NO. 17/1988 RELATING TO UNIVERSITY
OF WALES INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY.
RESOLUTION NO. 21/1991
"RESOLVED that Resolution No. 17/1988 be amended by deleting
the words 'Institute of science and Technology'
and substituting the words 'College of Cardiff'.
RESOLVED further that the amended resolution be read as follows:

of India under Section 24(1)(c)(iv) under the Advocates Act,
1961, the LL.B Degree of the University of Wales College of

22. HULL UNIVERSITY, U.K
RESOLUTION NO. 21/ 1990:
"RESOLVED that the LL.B Degree of the Hull University, U. K
be and is hereby recognised U/s 24(1)(c)(iv) of the Advocates
Act, 1961 for the purpose of enrolment as an advocate ."
23. LL.B DEGREE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA, CANADA
RESOLUTION NO. 102/1991 :
"The exercise of the powers vested in the Bar Council of India
under Section 24(1)(c)(iv) of the Advocates Act, 1961 and on
recommendation of the Legal Education Committee of the Bar Council
of India, it is resolved that the LL.B degree of the Alberta
University, Canada be recognised for the purpose of enrolment
as advocates."
24. BUCKINGHAM UNIVERSITY, U. K
Recommendations of the Legal Education Committee of the Bar Council of India dated 20.8.1993.
"The LL.B degree obtained from the Buckingham University is recognised for the purpose of enrolment as an advocate in India. The above resolution was approved by the Bar Council of India under Resolution No. 68 of 1993 dated 22.8.1993.
25. DEGREE OF JURIS DOCTOR FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, U.S.A.
RESOLUTION NO. 87/1993:
The Council is unable to accept the recommendation of the Legal
Education Committee and resolves that the degree of Juris Doctor
of the University of Michigan, U.S.A. be recognised for the
purpose of enrolment as an Advocate and the application of Ms.
Aparna Vishwanathan for admission to practise law in India after
her enrolment as an advocate be accepted. It is hereby resolved
that in exercise of the powers vested in the Bar Council of
India under Section 24(1)(c)(iv) of the Advocates Act, 1961
the degree of Juris Doctor of the University of Michigan, U.S.A
is hereby recognised for the purpose of enrolment as an advocate.
It is also hereby resolved that Ms. Aparna Vishwanathan be permitted to practise law in India after being enrolled as an advocate.

obtaining the said degree has completed his graduation before
joining the LL.B. Degree course of the University.

After Consideration Committee is of the view that though the
LL. B Degree of University of Melbourne, Australia is of three
year duration can be awarded to a student who join the course
after 12 years of schooling. The said degree can be recognised
for the purpose of enrolment only if the candidate has obtained
the degree after graduation. The recognition must be subject
to the condition that the candidate will have to pass the examination
prescribed by the Bar Council of India.
