National Law School of India University which was set up in 1987, has ensured a revolution in legal education. The value of a legal education is being recognised, and students from the top law schools of the country are finding it increasingly easier to walk into the best, and biggest, places to work at in India and abroad. The most recent example of this is being witnessed at the recruitment process of the second batch of the National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, which is due to graduate in March 2006.
From a batch strength of sixty-six, forty-seven students sat for the interviews which started on January 14, 2006. Out of the remaining nineteen students, twelve accepted offers from reputed law firms before the commencement of the recruitment process. Out of this six offers were made by Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A. Shroff & Co. (Mumbai and New Delhi), three by AZB Partners, Mumbai, two by Juriscorp, Mumbai and one by Pangea3, Mumbai. Four other students were also made similar offers by Amarchand & Mangaldas.
Nine law firms and seven companies participated in the Campus Recruitment. Amarchand & Mangaldas recruited twelve more students, Economic Laws Practice five students, Paras Kuhad Associates three students, Wadia Ghandy, Mumbai one student, and Kocchar & Co. one student. From the corporate sector, ICICI recruited two students, Infosys Technologies Ltd. three students, State Trading Corporation three students, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories two students, Hindustan Lever Ltd. one student, Quizlex, Hyderabad three students and Pangea3 one student.
ALMT Legal, Mumbai has recruited one student. Firms and companies like J. Sagar Associates, Nisith Desai Associates, New Delhi Law Offices, Thakker & Thakker, Mumbai, Advani & Co., Tottenham India Law Associates, Divya Shah Associates, UCO Bank and Emami are in the process of finalising their selection. Some students are applying to advocates to join litigation as their juniors, while some others have applied for judicial clerkship to the Supreme Court.
The compensation packages offered to students reflect the high esteem in which the corporate sector holds them: Amarchand & Mangaldas offered fresh recruits a package of Rs. 6.5 lakhs, while ICICI Bank Limited came up with a package of Rs. 7 lakhs. Other firms and companies were not too far behind! It is also useful to remember that these packages are subject to annual appraisal, which is usually in the months of April-May, and that a large number of law firms and companies reward performers with a bonus at the end of each year, which could be quite substantial in use. The compensation packages of the firms and companies that are still considering students for the purpose of recruitment cannot be disclosed at this stage.
Recruiters who were blinkered by the world of the IITs and IIMs earlier, therefore, have realised the merit and quality of students graduating from the National Law Schools, and the future for students graduating from these institutions seems immensely exciting!
