The second batch of the National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata (NUJS) which is due to graduate in March 2006, is proving true all the hype that has come to surround the Indian legal industry in general, and Indian legal education in particular. Students have been placed at some of the top Indian corporate houses, and at the best corporate law firms in the country. The pay packages that are offered to these students are cause for envy even among graduates from the top management and engineering institutes of the country, hitherto the bastions of dream careers.
Professor Madhava Menon, was also the force behind the establishment of NUJS. Professor Menon has been conferred the title of ‘Living Legend of Law’.
The student body at NUJS is among the smartest, brightest group of young people to be found anywhere in the country. Not only have they done the University proud in their academic and other achievements, they have also been instrumental in the development of the University in all its facets: from its outstanding recruitment records, to the campus itself, when they participated in decisions relating to the construction of the new campus buildings.
The reflection of the high academic standards that the founders of NUJS sought to establish is found in the success that the University’s students have repeatedly found in a number of other activities - their participation in moots (mock court competitions, where students from different law schools face off against each other in a highly competitive setting), and their repeated success, have made the rest of the Indian law student community, and the legal industry, sit up and take notice of them. Research articles and incisive analyses of legal issues by NUJS students routinely find themselves in leading journals, and students from the University have excelled in a number of other activities, thereby establishing the strength and credibility of the University.
LST, an organisation engaged in providing tutorial services for the highly competitive entrance examinations to the top law schools in the country, has played a significant part in contributing towards this increasing awareness of the benefits of a quality legal education in today’s economy. Through its various public and in-school seminars, and its highly popular and informative website, www.lawentrance.com, the organisation has brought information on these excellent institutions of academic brilliance to a large number of people.
