About NLU Shimla (Himachal Pradesh National Law University)

NLU Shimla was established under section 3 of the Himachal Pradesh National University Act. It was the second NLU after NLU Delhi to have its own entrance test (HPNET) for admission into its undergraduate and postgraduate programs. However, from 2019 onwards the admission in NLU Shimla n is exclusively based on the merit in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). The vision of the university is to strive to be an internationally recognized leader in socially relevant legal research and education in India and Abroad; to provide academically excellent, time-efficient and cost-effective legal education in the extreme North of India.

NLU Shimla, B.A./B.B.A., LL.B (Hons)

B.A./B.B.A., LL.B (Hons) are multidisciplinary undergraduate five-year full-time courses offered by NLU, Shimla. Duration of the Semesters in Under Graduate (UG) programs shall be of 18 weeks each with not less than 30 class hours per week including tutorials, examination, etc.

NLU Shimla B.A./B.B.A., LL.B (Hons) Qualifying exam

The Admission is exclusively based on the merit in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).

NLU Shimla Eligibility For B.A./B.B.A., LL.B (Hons)

Candidates must meet the criteria listed below to be eligible for the course

  • Candidates should have graduated from 12th (10+2) examination from any recognized board with minimum 50 % (45 % for S.C/S.T.) in one attempt.
  • Students who have appeared for their H.S.C finals and awaiting results are also eligible to apply, subject to the submission of passing certificate by the announced date
  • Applicants who have obtained 10+2 through Open Universities system directly without having any basic qualification are not eligible for the Law Course

  • A total of 60 seats is available in each undergraduate program. Additionally, 9 supernumerary seats are also provided.

NLU Shimla Placement: The University came into existence in 2016. Although the first batch will graduate in the year 2021, a higher rate of placement can be expected.

NLU Shimla LL.M

NLU Shimla offers a postgraduate programme i.e. Master of Laws (LL.M.). The duration of the programme is one year.

NLU Shimla Eligibility For LL.M

Candidates must meet the criteria listed below to be eligible for the course
ยท Candidates should have passed his/her undergraduate i.e. LL.B. Degree (3 years or 5 years) from any recognized University in India or foreign University recognized as equivalent under Indian Law with minimum 55% or an equivalent grade point

  • In determining equivalency the university listed with Association of Indian Universities and any Other nodal agency which is statutorily empowered to determined equivalency will be considered.

In 2019 the candidate with 125th rank was offered a seat in round 1. In the third round the Cutoff dropped to 1471.

NLU Shimla Ph.D

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Law is a Full-time Ph.D programme offered by NLU, Shimla. The a minimum duration of the Ph.D. programme shall be three years, including course work. The maximum duration shall be six years.

NLU Shimla Eligibility For Ph.D

Candidates must meet the criteria listed below to be eligible for the course

  • LL.M. Degree from any recognized University in India or Foreign University recognized as equivalent under Indian Law with minimum 55% or an equivalent marks or grade without any round-off will have to qualify through all India Entrance Exam, or UGC-NET/JRF/SLET.

NLU Shimla Admission Process for Ph.D

  • Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET/JRF/SLET can directly submit a research proposal without appearing in the Entrance Exam.
  • Having qualified through entrance test or UGC-NET/JRF/SLET candidate has to submit 'Research Proposal' which he has to defend to the satisfaction of the Board of Studies in Law of this University. See Annexure-II
