Teesside University, Middlesbrough (North) - LLB Courses
LLB Honours
Teesside has a long tradition of quality legal education. Many graduates have followed successful careers as solicitors and barristers, as well as in other professions.
The LLB (Hons) course is a qualifying law degree and provides exemption from the academic stage of legal training for the Bar Council and Law Society Examinations. It is modular and all subjects required for professional status are compulsory. The seven foundation subjects of Law are covered: Law of Contract, Law of Tort, Land Law, Criminal Law, Public Law, Law of Equity and Trusts and EU Law. Students explore key legal concepts and reasoning that can be applied to the substantive law across a range of areas. Also skills such as the ability to research and present information are developed through individual and group tasks.
Facilities & Opportunities:
Law is also available with other subjects as part of a combined degree and non-law graduates are able to take the LLB (Hons) Senior Status Route over two years of full-time study.
The Law courses have a strong personal tutorial system and staff use various supportive teaching methods. Traditional lectures are used to set coursework in context and guide students in their reading and exploration of the books, journals, newspapers and computer-based information in the University's Learning Resource Centre. Tutors operate a duty rota and office hours system outside formal lecture and tutorial times.
The Mooting Society is run entirely by students and operates a series of internal and external moots (mock trials), including a regional inter-university competition. A separate Law Society also organises social events.
Single and Combined Honours Degrees:
This field of study includes single honours degrees and combined honours degrees (the combinations available are shown in the table). Combined degrees are designed for students who wish to pursue two areas of study. The major subject makes up approximately two-thirds of their studies and the second, minor subject makes up approximately one-third. Students study largely the same core modules on the combined degrees as they do on the single honours degrees. Like the single honours law degrees, the combined honours degrees are qualifying law degrees.
The degrees incorporate both core and option modules and the third year culminates in the final dissertation.
Career Opportunities:
Nationally, about 30 per cent of Law graduates decide to complete their training and follow careers as barristers or solicitors. Law graduates might also begin careers in, for example, the civil service, the probation service, trading standards, local government, private industry or commerce. Some go on to undertake further study and research towards qualifications such as the LLM or PhD.
LLB (Hons)
The study of law provides students with opportunities for thought and argument on many interesting legal topics. Many professions, in addition to the legal profession itself, regard an LLB as a very valuable qualification.
As well as the seven core subjects of law, listed above, the course includes modules that underpin the study of law, such as Legal Method and Legal Skills, and subjects that are designed to encourage the development of a well-rounded approach to legal study, such as The English Legal System. During the course, students have the opportunity to visit law courts and experience legal debates. They may also undertake optional work placements.
In Year 3, a wide choice of option modules is available. Students are able to select up to eight subjects to match their interests or career plans. These may include, for example, Evidence, Roman Law, Medical Law and Employment Law. Those with a particular interest in a legal theme, for example, business law or welfare law, may, with guidance, select a cluster of modules appropriate to such a specialism. A dissertation on a legal subject of personal interest is also completed in the final year, following a module on Legal Research Methods & Skills in the second year.
LLB (Hons) (Senior Status)
This course is for graduates holding a non-law degree or those with qualifications equivalent to a degree.
Entry Requirements
Students must hold an undergraduate degree in a different discipline. No specific classification required.
