LLB Honours
Business Law

Introduction:

This programme is designed to produce graduates with high levels of legal knowledge and skill, which will equip them for careers in the legal profession, in business, and in the law-related areas such as the accountancy, financial regulation, insurance and governmental service. The LLB Business Law provides greater choice by way of the provision of a specialist route - business law.

The programme provides exemption from the Academic Stage of qualification as a solicitor or barrister. It emphasises the seven core areas of law required by the Law Society and Bar Council (Criminal Law, Contract Law, Tort, Public Law, European Law, Land Law and Equity and Trusts). It also provides a thorough understanding of the context in which those core areas operate, including international and European perspectives.

Teaching, on the LLB Business Law programme, concentrates on the interactive and dynamic nature of law and legal practice, providing opportunities for legal research, scholarship, and debate at all levels. Students rapidly become independent, self-motivated participants in an exciting and relevant pursuit.

The programme aims to instil in students both the intellectual rigour of the law and an openness of mind that is essential in the modern world. Graduates will have pursued a specialist course of study in law which is intended to provide them with depth as well as breadth of knowledge of the discipline and develop general transferable / generic skills.

Course Structure:

Assessment varies according to the module and may include coursework, examination, presentation, group work, and case studies. For each module there is normally one assessment during the semester and an examination at the end of the semester.

Your final degree classification will be calculated using a weighting of one third of your level 2 average and two thirds of your level 3 average.

Assessment:

All courses within the Undergraduate Modular programme follow the same basic structure. The academic year is divided into two semesters. Semester one runs from October to February with a break for Christmas, Semester two runs from February to June with a break for Easter.

In each semester, you will study 4 modules to obtain 60 credit points and thus accumulate 360 credit points for the honours degree award. Under the Credit Accumulation and Transfer scheme (CATS), students who have successfully completed study elsewhere can apply to join the second, third or final years of courses within the Modular Programme.

Marketing with Law BA (Hons)

Course description:

This major/minor award combines 75% of the marketing degree with 25% of the law degree.

Marketing is not just about profiling the success of Coca-Cola, McDonalds and Nike training shoes. In increasingly competitive, if not saturated, markets all companies need to develop a marketing philosophy and a strategic marketing approach to doing business. This means in both consumer and business markets, in service as well as manufacturing companies, and in the public sector. Consider the differences in approach towards selling a £1M package of management consultancy services compared to selling a tin of beans.

Our society now comprises many different subcultures based on age, ethnicity, gender and lifestyle values. How can marketers keep up with these changes, adapting and developing products and communication strategies to reach these groups? How do customers perceive themselves and the brands they buy? How do they perceive competitor offerings? How do we attract their attention, increase their knowledge and alter their behaviours?

The major route in marketing examines all these issues and will provide you with a sound underpinning in this exciting academic discipline. Choice from a range of option pairs in your final year will enable you to support this with study of specialist marketing applications to suit your interests and career aspirations. Successful completion of the programme will mean you are eligible for entry to the Chartered Institute of Marketing Diploma final exams. This will give you the opportunity to gain a postgraduate qualification that is widely recognised in the market place.

The minor in law has been designed to provide a legal education to those whose primary interests lie in the area of business and management. It seeks to develop in students the ability to analyse practical business problems using legal techniques and to give an understanding of relevant areas of law.
