CLAT Section- wise preparation tips.

Quantitative Techniques

Make it a goal to solve at least 20 relevant questions daily. Go by practicing specific topics for the first two months and mixed topics for the whole of the last month. Time yourself regularly. If you are diligent enough and grasp the concepts you should be able to solve most of the questions within a minute as you approach the end of your preparation.

A few useful tips:

  • Memorize tables up to 20, squares up to 30 and cubes up to 20. This will be useful in both maths as well as the logical reasoning section.

  • Work upon the variations in the practical usage of formulas. For example, in mensuration, the formulas need to be applied judiciously to arrive at the right result.

  • Out of the 20 questions, at least 10 can be solved in less than 1 minute. Identify the first, to maximize your score.

  • Don’t spend more than 15 minutes on this section unless you have completed the rest of the exams already.


Legal Reasoning 

  • Candidate must continuously invest time in reading articles related to static and current legal issues.

  • Focus on the legal issues from last 10 months and read about them.

  • Special attention should be paid to landmark judgments and important cases from the last year. 

  • Read about all the new amendments and enactments done in both monsoon and winter sessions of the parliament along with contemporary issues like LGBTQ rights or the death penalty which have been a part of the news in the last few months.

  • Reading about static and current legal issues prior to your CLAT  will help you in understanding the passage easily and at a much faster pace during your final exam.

  • Secondly, you might land up in a situation where you are running out of time and cannot invest the last three-four minutes left in reading the entire passage. Here, your prior basic

Understanding of the legal issue will be of great help as you might be able to answer a couple of questions even without reading the entire passage word to word.

  • Improve your legal vocabulary including legal jargons, legal terms, foreign phrases, and maxims. 

  • To improve this area, go through the list of such terms with their meanings multiple times will help.

  • Lookup for a term if you do not understand the meaning. Practice this will preparing for the legal passages.  


English Language 


  • For this part, it is necessary to read as much as possible.

  • Reading the newspaper and learning new words will prove to be beneficial.

  • Practicing comprehension passages will increase your answering speed.

  • Solve the previous year’s question papers.

  • Take online mock tests and check your performance.


General Knowledge and Current Affairs

Stay aware. Awareness plays a key role in this section. One must make his/ her habit of reading newspapers and watching the news daily. Basic knowledge of History, Geography and Science will be preferred as a great advantage. The Hindu will be enough and try to utilize the entire free portal which provides current affairs.

Logical Reasoning 

  • Devote specific time to this section of the exam and prepare a well organised preparation plan. 


  • CLAT logical reasoning tests your ability to think logically. Candidates should attempt the questions from the given passage for the short passage questions, irrespective of focusing on factual correctness. Answer the questions with clarity and do not complicate the arguments.  


  • It is necessary to take mock tests while preparing for any exam. This will help you in understating the type of questions asked in the exam and also in evaluating your progress. Analyzing the result of your mock will help you to figure out your weak areas so that you can focus on those and score better in the exam. Try to take the mock exam in an isolated place in order to replicate the real exam scenario. This will help you to deal with the stress on the day of the exam. 


  • This section of the exams is time-consuming and tricky. It is imperative for the candidates to understand the importance of time-consuming while attending this section. Candidates must focus on increasing their speed of reading the passages and solving the questions while maintaining accuracy. Do not spend too much time on one question. Try to solve the question that seems easy to you. Focus on the difficult question later.
