AILET (NLU Delhi) 2013- Exam Analysis
Overview
Although the paper was like previous years in terms of pattern, but it did defy expectations of the students in terms of the difficulty level of the General Knowledge and Mathematics sections. These sections which are known to be the easier sections can prove to be the deciding factor for the students. Like the previous year, the total number of questions that appeared was 150. These questions were to be solved in 90 minutes. Each question carried 1 mark. The paper was divided into 5 sections. 35 marks were allotted to four sections (English, Logical reasoning, Legal reasoning and General Knowledge) and 10 marks to the section on Mathematics.
English
The section was on expected lines. The section saw a Reading Comprehension passage of about 650-700 words with 7 questions. There were quite a few questions on Grammar with many FIBs based on prepositions. 3-4 questions each of Synonyms, Antonyms and Para Jumbles were also asked. Overall, the section was easy albeit a lengthy one. It might have been prudent to leave the RC for the end as it can take away precious time. A score of around 25-27 should be a good score for this section.
Legal Aptitude
After the last years’ experiment with the Legal Aptitude Section
, it was more on the expected lines this year. There was approximately an equal proportion of Reasoning and Knowledge based questions. The questions based on reasoning were primarily from topics of Law of Torts including the concepts of vicarious liability, Strict Liability and Negligence, Law of Crimes including theft, abetment and criminal conspiracy, Constitutional Law. The knowledge based questions were from areas including but not limited to Constitutional law, Law Commission, Treaties, Definitions from concepts of law etc. Overall, an attempt of 32- 35 was manageable and 26- 28 would be a good score.
General Knowledge
The difficulty level of this section was moderate to high. Total number of questions asked was 35. Questions were more from static GK and only a few questions were from current affairs. History and Science dominated the entire paper. Nature of questions was a mix of facts and concepts. The areas from which the questions were asked are Science, Economy, Current Affairs, History, Polity, Sports, and Geography etc. Questions from science and history were tricky. A score of 20-23 would be good.
Mathematics
This section was full of questions from Arithmetic. Though most of the questions were based on basic concepts, all of them required some time to solve. A score of 5-7 would be considered as good. Two questions were from Number System and rest of the questions were from Time, speed and distance, Time and work, Profit, loss and discount, Average and others.
Reasoning
The section saw primarily moderate-tough level of questions. There were no questions on syllogisms. One set of Analytical Reasoning was tough and could have been left unattempted. A couple of questions required careful reading. In the questions based on Series, the candidates were asked to find the wrong term in the series. There were four questions based on word arrangement where the candidates had to find the word which could not be formed from the letters of the given word. These four questions were easy and should have been attempted. Questions were also asked from areas like Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, Analytical Reasoning, Critical Reasoning, Calendars and others. A score of around 22 - 25 can be considered a good for this section.
The expected cut-off for this paper should range between 98 to 102 marks. Since the paper was very much on expected lines, it should have been able to put you in the mood for other law entrances that follow.
