Student Bar Review - Nani Palkhivala Memorial Trust Essay Competition

The Student Bar Review in association with the Nani Palkhivala Memorial Trust is pleased to announce the First Annual Student Bar Review - Nani Palkhivala Memorial Trust Taxation Law Essay Competition. Entries are invited on the following broad topics from current students from any law school or university in India . The topics are as follows:-

  • Central Sales Tax Act – Problems and Solutions within the Constitutional Framework
  • Fringe Benefit Tax
  • Any Major Recent Issue on International Taxation with Regard to Double Taxation Treaties
  • The National Tax Tribunal: An Evil or a Necessity?
  • Taxation of Software
  • Delegated Legislation in Tax Laws
  • The Tribunalization of Justice: Is the National Tax Tribunal the answer? The Constitutional Validity of the National Tax Tribunal. (It is clarified that participants may address the issue of the desirability of the National Tax Tribunal or its constitutional validity or both) *NEW*
  • Constitutional Validity on Service Tax on Works Contracts *NEW*
  • Levy of Service Tax on Services Rendered Outside India: Validity and Policy Implications *NEW*

These topics are broad and participants are free to focus on a narrow area within the topic. (For example, a participant who chooses to write on "Fringe Benefit Tax" may focus on an area like constitutionality of fringe benefit tax or the desirability of having fringe benefit tax at all.)

The entries will be judged by a panel of eminent judges who will declare the 1 st prize (Rs. 5000), 2 nd prize (Rs. 3000) and 3 rd Prize (Rs. 2000). Prize winners will be invited to Madras for the awards ceremony and all participants will be given certificates. The decision of the panel will be final and binding. All participants must mail two copies to the following address: "Student Bar Review, National Law School of India University, Post Bag 7201, Nagarbhavi, Bangalore - 560072."

Soft copies of each entry should be mailed to sbr@nls.ac.in. The last date of submission is now May 10th May 21st, 2007. Results will be declared by May 31 st 2007.
